College Students Anonymously Create Beautiful Illustrated Quotes on a Classroom Chalkboard Each Week
Each week, anonymous students at Columbus College of Art & Design (CCAD) in Columbus, OH take over a chalkboard in an empty classroom on the 3rd floor of the Crane Building to chalk beautifully illustrated quotes. The students who are collectively known as DangerDust said during an interview with CCAD News that each project can take up to 11 hours but it’s a way to gain inspiration during a long semester of work.
When you’re working on long extended projects for graphic design classes it’s easy to… lose motivation,” they said. “I think we’re tired of the computer, and [chalking] gives us motivation.
The quotes have come from such sources both current and historical, from those living and those dead. The variety of sources are as much a surprise as the design.
They choose a quote from a list compiled from Google searches and suggestions from friends, draw up a rough sketch, and then get to work using regular chalk (usually from the dollar store, they joked).
So far, the chalking has included quotes from Banksy, Ellen Lupton, Claude Debussy, Nicole Jacek, Tavi Gevinson, J.M. Barrie, Stefan Sagmeister, Bill Cosby, Jessica Hische, and Nelson Mandela.
