Laughing Squid Terms of Service

Last updated: October 26, 2026

1. Agreement to these Terms

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) are an agreement between you and Laughing Squid LLC (“Laughing Squid,” “we,” “us”) and govern your use of laughingsquid.com (the “Site”) and our newsletter. By using the Site, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy (https://laughingsquid.com/privacy-policy/), which is part of these Terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the Site.

2. Who can use the Site

The Site is a general-audience site and is not directed to children under 13. If you are under the age of majority where you live, you may use the Site only with the involvement of a parent or guardian.

The Site and its original content, including text, graphics, logos, the Laughing Squid name and squid logo, and the selection and arrangement of material, are owned by Laughing Squid or its licensors and are protected by copyright, trademark, and other laws. Videos, photographs, and other material embedded from or credited to third-party creators remain the property of their respective owners.

You may access and view the Site for lawful purposes and freely share links to our posts. You may also quote excerpts of our original content with appropriate credit and a link to the source.

Other copying, republishing, distributing, selling, or commercially exploiting our original content requires our prior written permission, except where permitted by applicable law.

Nothing in these Terms limits your rights under copyright law, including fair use for purposes such as criticism, commentary, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research.

You may not use the Laughing Squid name, logo, or other trademarks in a way that falsely suggests our endorsement or affiliation without our permission.

4. Automated access and AI training

You may not use robots, scrapers, crawlers, or other automated means to systematically copy, download, collect, or extract substantial amounts of content from the Site for unauthorized republication, commercial exploitation, dataset creation, or training, fine-tuning, or developing artificial intelligence or machine learning models without our prior written permission.

This restriction does not prohibit:

  • Search engines from indexing the Site in accordance with our robots.txt file and other published crawling instructions.
  • Ordinary access to our public RSS feeds by feed readers and aggregators.
  • Social media platforms generating previews of links to our content.
  • Accessibility tools and other technologies that help people access the Site.
  • Activities we have expressly authorized or uses permitted by applicable law.

Automated access must not interfere with the Site’s operation, security, performance, or advertising, or attempt to bypass technical restrictions or access controls.

We reserve the right to restrict unauthorized automated access and enforce our rights under applicable law.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Break any law or infringe anyone else’s rights while using the Site.
  • Interfere with the Site’s operation, security, or advertising, including by introducing malware or attempting to gain unauthorized access.
  • Generate fraudulent ad impressions or clicks, or use the Site to mislead or defraud others.
  • Use the Site in any way that could harm Laughing Squid, our readers, or our partners.

We may block or limit access to the Site for anyone who violates these Terms.

The Site includes links to other websites, content embedded from third-party services, and ads provided by third parties. We don’t control and aren’t responsible for third-party websites, content, products, or services, and your dealings with them are between you and them. Some links are affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission if you make a purchase. See our Affiliate Disclosure (https://laughingsquid.com/affiliate-disclosure/).

7. Newsletter

If you subscribe to our newsletter, you agree to receive it by email. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any issue.

We respect the rights of creators. If you believe content on the Site infringes your copyright, send a notice to our designated agent at dmca@laughingsquid.com with the subject “DMCA Notice,” including the following (see 17 U.S.C. § 512(c)(3)):

  • Your physical or electronic signature, as the copyright owner or a person authorized to act for them.
  • Identification of the copyrighted work you claim is infringed.
  • Identification of the material on the Site you claim is infringing, with enough information for us to find it, such as the URL.
  • Your name, mailing address, telephone number, and email address.
  • A statement that you have a good-faith belief that the use is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
  • A statement that the information in your notice is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that you are the owner or authorized to act on the owner’s behalf.

We will review complete notices and remove or disable access to material when appropriate.

9. Disclaimers

The Site and its content are provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory, to the fullest extent permitted by applicable law. This includes implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement.

We work to provide interesting and accurate content, but we do not guarantee that information on the Site is complete, current, accurate, or suitable for any particular purpose.

We do not guarantee that the Site will always be available, uninterrupted, secure, error-free, or free of viruses or other harmful components.

Content published on Laughing Squid is provided for general information and entertainment purposes. Your use of the Site and reliance on its content are at your own discretion and risk.

Some jurisdictions do not permit certain warranty exclusions. Nothing in these Terms excludes warranties or rights that cannot legally be excluded.

10. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, Laughing Squid LLC and its members, officers, employees, contractors, vendors, and service providers will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, revenue, data, goodwill, or use arising from or relating to the Site or these Terms.

This limitation applies regardless of the legal theory underlying a claim, including contract, negligence, or other legal grounds, even if we have been advised that such damages were possible.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, our total aggregate liability for claims arising from or relating to the Site or these Terms will not exceed one hundred U.S. dollars (US$100).

Nothing in this section excludes or limits liability that cannot legally be excluded or limited.

Indemnification. To the extent permitted by applicable law, you agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Laughing Squid LLC and its members, officers, employees, and contractors against third-party claims, losses, damages, and reasonable legal expenses arising from:

  • Your material violation of these Terms.
  • Your unlawful or unauthorized use of the Site.

This indemnification obligation does not apply to claims caused by Laughing Squid’s own wrongful conduct.

11. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York and applicable United States federal law, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.

12. Changes to the Site and these Terms

We may modify, suspend, or discontinue any part of the Site at any time.

We may also update these Terms to reflect changes to the Site, our business practices, or applicable law. When we make changes, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page.

If changes materially affect users’ legal rights or obligations, we will provide additional notice when appropriate or required by law, such as a notice on the Site or an announcement in our newsletter.

Updated Terms generally apply prospectively from their effective date. Changes will not retroactively affect disputes that arose before the changes took effect, unless otherwise permitted by applicable law.

Your continued use of the Site after updated Terms become effective may constitute acceptance to the extent permitted by applicable law. Where affirmative agreement is legally required, we will seek that agreement.

13. General

These Terms, together with any additional terms you expressly agree to, govern your use of the Site.

Our Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and share personal information. It does not replace any consent required under applicable privacy laws.

If any provision of these Terms is found invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions will continue in effect to the fullest extent permitted by law.

Our failure to enforce a provision does not waive our right to enforce it later.

You may not transfer your rights or obligations under these Terms without our written consent. We may transfer our rights and obligations in connection with a merger, acquisition, sale, or reorganization of our business.

Provisions that by their nature are intended to survive termination of your use of the Site, including those concerning intellectual property, disclaimers, limitations of liability, indemnification, and governing law, will remain in effect.
