Wickr, An App Designed to Provide Easy Encryption for Text, Audio, and Video Messages
Initially launched in 2012, Wickr is a free app that provides improved encryption for text, audio, and video messages. In order to work properly, both the sender and recipient must have the app, but setup is simple — no email address is required even.
Wickr allows senders to select an amount of time before messages self-destruct and includes tools to wipe attachment metadata that could potentially give away information like location. The app uses standard encryption algorithms in such a way that the plaintext of messages is never seen except by the desired recipients, but it does not encrypt phone calls.
