Danger Ranger (pictured here) recently uploaded a bunch of great photos from Burning Man 1990, the first year the event took place in the Black Rock Desert. There’s even a photo of Laughing Squid’s own John Law dressed as sheik.

For more on Burning Man 1990, see my previous posts “Bad Day At Black Rock (Cacophony Society Zone Trip #4)” and “Burning Man 1990-1995 Photos, The Birth of Black Rock City”.

Man, that Michael Michael was a handsome guy … You can’t even tell anymore … I saw him at Santarchy, and he’s gained a lot of weight and has a full white beard and stuff.

It happens to the best of us, it happens to the worst. It’ll happen to you, too. Try and make sure you stay pretty inside.

Its just good to see the man sitting directly on the playa, instead of perched on a ridiculous pedestal, a pyramid of plywood, a circus tent, a mechanically raised, computer controlled platform, a tent full of corporate sponsers or a tower of united nations flags.

I’ve been a burner since 97, just after the infamous Helco year. Basically the exact point when everything started to change. I’ve witnessed that strange evolution of the event from humble drunken jackassery to million dollar, media-whoring, politically correct, family event. Every year I quietly discussed the fact that every year it slides further and further down the back of the bell curve. Every year I’ve ignored the themes and worked with my campmates to shape the event to what we think it should be, not what Larry incorporated has thought it should be.

Ah, good times.
