Christina Sterbenz of Business Insider has put together a fascinating list of the etymologies of all 50 state’s names. Michigan was named for Lake Michigan, stemming from a French spelling of meshi-gami, which means “big lake” in Algonquian, and Ohio was named for the Iroquoian word for “good river” in reference to the Ohio River.
