Nerdcore For Life, A Documentary About Nerdcore Hip-Hop

posted by Scott Beale on Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

“Nerdcore For Life”, a documentary by Dan Lamoureux about Nerdcore Hip-Hop, screens this Saturday, July 12th at the Roxie Theater in San Francisco as part of the San Francisco Frozen Film Festival.

The term “Nerdcore” refers to both a sub-genre of hip-hop music that is created by self-professed nerds and to the subculture that has grown out of that style of music.

Nerdcore For Life! profiles the fascinating and tumultuous world of Nerdcore Hip-Hop. Born on the internet, “Nerd rap” is breaking out into the real world at a lightning pace. Our cameras follow the top names in this new genre as they celebrate Geek Life to the fullest and deal with the common obstacles that block musicians of all genres from fulfilling their dreams.

Here’s more on the “Nerdcore For Life” screening from Doctor Popular.

United and Mighty Soviet Jazz Rock Union

posted by Johannes on Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

guest post by Johannes Grenzfurthner

I’m currently doing lots of research for the 2nd part of our computer game trilogy Soviet Unterzoegersdorf. And I stumbled upon some really great non-traditional versions of the Soviet national anthem.

Here is an early 1990’s improvisational and very jazzrockish take with lots of mullets.

And here is another gem. A rather minimalistic techno version. Feel the beat of the kolchoz.

I wish you a happy dictatorship of the proletariat.

The AirPiano, A Musical Device Played By Moving Hands In The Air

posted by Scott Beale on Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Designer Omer Yosha has created a prototype of The AirPiano, an amazing musical device that is controlled by moving hands in the air above it. Here’s more on The AirPiano from Create Digital Music.

Above the AirPiano is a virtual matrix of keys and faders, each assigned with MIDI messages and ready to be triggered. The length of a triggered note is equivalent to the time a hand is placed on the corresponding virtual key.

Singing Tesla Coils by ArcAttack

posted by Scott Beale on Thursday, June 12th, 2008

Joe DiPrima and Oliver Greaves of ArcAttack have created an amazing pair of Singing Tesla Coils that are used in conjunction with their DJ setup. Sean Savage shot a great video of them performing the 1970’s electronic hit “Popcorn” at Flipside 2008.

ArcAttack employs a unique DJ set up of their own creation (an HVDJ set up) to generate an ‘electrifying’ audio visual performance. The HVDJ pumps music through a PA System while two specially designed DRSSTC’s (Dual-Resonant Solid State Tesla Coils) act as separate synchronized instruments.

These high tech machines produce an electrical arc similar to a continuous lightning bolt which put out a crisply distorted square wave sound reminiscent of the early days of synthesizers. The music consists of original highly dance-able electronic compositions that sometimes incorporates themes or dub of popular songs.

Here are the Singing Tesla Coils performing “Creepy Circus Song”.

Playing the Building, A Sound Installation by David Byrne

posted by Scott Beale on Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

The latest episode of Boing Boing TV features Xeni Jardin visting David Byrne in NYC where he gives her a tour of a the Battery Maritime Building that he has turned into a giant musical instrument, part of his Playing the Building series of sound installations.

Playing the building is a sound installation in which the infrastructure, the physical plant of the building, is converted into a giant musical instrument. Devices are attached to the building structure — to the metal beams and pillars, the heating pipes, the water pipes — and are used to make these things produce sound. The activations are of three types: wind, vibration, striking. The devices do not produce sound themselves, but they cause the building elements to vibrate, resonate and oscillate so that the building itself becomes a very large musical instrument.

Playing the Building

The installation is located at 10 South Street in Manhattan and runs through August 8th, open Friday-Sunday, noon - 6pm (admission is free).

Mashup of William Shatner’s Common People & Start Trek Animation

posted by Scott Beale on Saturday, June 7th, 2008

YouTube user kirkslashspock has created a brilliant mashup of the Star Trek animated series and the cover of Pulp’s “Common People” by William Shatner from his album “Has Been”. The video was done in the style of the Kirk/Spock stories:

Almost from the beginning, fans noticed the loving nature of the relationship. A few fan writers started speculating about the possibility of a sexual relationship between Kirk and Spock. The Kirk/Spock phenomenon eventually took on a life of its own, and became one of the driving forces in Star Trek fanzines during their heyday.

Big Ideas (Don’t Get Any), A Remix of Radiohead’s Nude

posted by Scott Beale on Saturday, June 7th, 2008

“Big Ideas (Don’t get any)”, a unique remix of Radiohead’s “Nude” by James Houston.

Based on the lyric (and alternate title) “Big Ideas: Don’t get any” I grouped together a collection of old redundant hardware, and placed them in a situation where they’re trying their best to do something that they’re not exactly designed to do, and not quite getting there.

Beautiful Music Made From Windows XP & 98 Sounds

posted by Simone on Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

Introducing our newest guest blogger, the wonderful Simone Davalos of Suicide Bots and RoboGames. - Scott

Noodling around this evening I StumbledUpon this nifty video of a piece of music made entirely out of alert sounds from windows XP and 98, made and posted on YouTube by SomethingUnreal. Not only is it a good thing with which to waste five minutes, it has a good beat and you can dance to it:

There are also a healthy handful of remixes and remixes of remixes since this thing came out in December 2007, and they cover just about every genre you can handle, and some you can’t.

The sound editing software is freeware called ModPlug Tracker. Here’s a brief guide on how to play around with it. I can’t vouch for the program myself, being a mac type of girl, but have a look and let us know what you think.
