Unicode Standard Update Set to Bring Around 250 New Emoji to a Variety of Platforms
Version 7.0 of the Unicode Standard has been released with support for around 250 new emoji. Given that many major software platforms like iOS use the Unicode Standard as a basis for text characters, this means that there is now a beginning of support for many more emoji to arrive on things like smartphones.
Version 7.0 of the Unicode Standard only includes a black and white representation of the emoji and a short description like “SNOW CAPPED MOUNTAIN” so it’s currently unclear exactly how these might look when they make the jump to actual use. More on the Version 7.0 pictographs and symbols is available via a PDF on their website.
