Curiously Lifelike Soft Robots Created With Evolutionary Algorithms
The curiously lifelike blocky creatures leaping and bounding in this video are soft robots that were designed not by people, but by evolutionary algorithms. The robots are the result of computational evolution research at the Cornell Creative Machines Lab and the Evolving Artificial Intelligence Lab at the University of Wyoming. Researchers provided the algorithms with building blocks inspired by biology: muscle, bone, and support tissues. The robots created by the algorithms were then selected for locomotion speed, resulting in faster and faster robot designs.
