SHOAL, A Fish Robot That Detects Pollution
http://youtu.be/rBeFsYfNUp4
SHOAL is an autonomous robotic fish that detects water pollution in harbors. The robot patrols the harbor searching for pollutants, communicating with fellow SHOAL robots and a base station. When the robot detects a pollutant, it uses artificial intelligence to track the pollutant down to the source to allow an immediate response by authorities (traditional water sampling and lab testing takes weeks to spark a response). SHOAL robots are currently being tested in the Port of Gijon in Spain.
SHOAL is a collaboration between BMT Group, University of Essex, Tyndall National Institute, University of Strathclyde, Thales Safare, and the Port Authority of Gijon.
