fake cop

Photographing architecture is not a crime. Impersonating a police officer is. Yesterday my friend Thomas Hawk and a couple of other photographers who were out on a architectural photo shoot in San Francisco and had a bizarre run-in at 45 Fremont Street with a guy pretending to be a cop, who then ended up assulting Thomas. The fake cop refused to provide any form of identification. Here’s the full story.

Give ‘em hell Thomas!

I have participated in two protests at Bechtel, 50 Beale St, in the past two months, one on May 4 and one on Aug 9. This act of violence against Thomas occurred about a month after eight mild-mannered individuals, politely walking in and asking to make an appointment to speak to CEO Riley Bechtel, triggered security to put the building on lockdown for 45 minutes. They thought we were going to cause trouble of some sort I guess? …Then on Aug 9 a bunch of people did an action attempting to block various entrances to the building, leading to 7 arrests. Bechtel security knew that another protest was planned for Aug 9. They may have thought that Thomas was casing out the building for a sit-in or other act of resistance. (A huge sit-in occurred in the spring of 2003 and Bechtel has adopted quite strict policies since then.) …Bechtel deserves it, too: Many Bechtel execs hold high-level government positions from which they create a lot of horrendous public and foreign policy. They’re also a top manager of nuclear weapons facilities, among many other misdeeds.
