Earlier today over 600 people posed naked for photographer Spencer Tunick on the Aletsch Glacier near Bettmeralp, Switzerland. The photo shoot was a joint venture with Greenpeace Switzerland to raise awareness of global climate change.

Greenpeace has a bunch of photos of the installation.

Spencer, who is known for his photography of very large groups of naked people in public settings, recently had photo shoots in Amsterdam and Mexico City.

Are they lying on something because all I can think of is COLD. I would already be so self conscious about participating in one of these photo shoots but I imagine this would be one place where there would be a more pressing problem than naked. COLD. :-)

Wouldn’t all that body heat contribute to the melting of the glaciers?

I very much doubt the body heat had any measurable effect. Just a few minutes of contact after all. It’s the bigger picture we need to worry about.

From BBC story:

The Aletsch glacier isn’t just one of the world’s beauty spots. Water from its ice melt fills Europe’s rivers, irrigates crops and cools nuclear power stations. But in fifty years, scientists say the ice could all be gone.

There’s also video of the naked glacier shoot. With yodeling even!

I don’t thing being self consious would be much of an issue. Cold tends to make things shrink. . . . .
