Doorhenge, A Strange Monument in Golden Gate Park

Doorhenge is a strange monument that was mysteriously erected in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park on August 19th. Here’s where it is located.

August 19 until September

Long ago a mysterious civilization erected Henges all over the world. Their motivation is the subject of scholarly debate, and will ultimately never be known for sure.

Every so often one of these Henges reappears for a short time, and then disappears on the next solstice. The scientific mechanism behind this is another mystery, though most people have stopped trying to figure it out and accept that it is probably
“some sort of magic”.

So please take a moment to look around this monument. The people who made it are surely long gone, and any religious significance has long been forgotten. But it’s still quite pretty to look at, isn’t it?

there’s only one problem here …

a “henge” is actually an earthen dig (think “trench”) — the henge in stone henge isn’t referring to the stones, it’s referring to the circular ditch *around* the stones.

lemme guess, you’re americans.

Yes. You win. You’re smarter. Us Americans like shorter, easier-to-relate-to-the-spoofed-landmark names. Maybe.

Regardless of etymology, I understand they got a lot of points for it.
