An Unexpectedly Curious Sperm Whale Explores a Bright Yellow ROV During a 2015 Nautilus Dive

While exploring the Gulf of Mexico off of the Louisiana coast in April 2015, the ROV Hercules, launched from the E/V Nautilus, was unexpectedly visited by a curious juvenile sperm whale who calmly swam laps around the bright yellow robot in order to try and understand what it was. The crew onboard, on the other hand, were beside themselves with joy at the sight of the visitor.

At 598 meters (1,962 ft) below the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Louisiana, ROV Hercules encountered a magnificent sperm whale. The whale circled Hercules several times and gave our cameras the chance to capture some incredible footage of this beautiful creature. Encounters between sperm whales and ROVs are incredibly rare.
