Using a Robotic Camera to Capture a Ballet Performance

The fascinating mini documentary “Ballet Meets Robotics” tells the tale of a film experiment in which director Tarik Abdel-Gawad used a robotic camera to record a Yuri Possokhov dance piece performed by San Francisco Ballet principal dancers Maria Kochetkova and Joan Boada. To record the performance, Abdel-Gawad used a motion capture studio to map out the dancers’ movements. The information was used to sync the camera to the performance for the final filming. The project culminated in the short film, “Francesca Da Rimini.”
