Google Maps Street View of Abandoned ‘Battleship Island’ in Japan

Google recently released Street View imagery for Hashima, an abandoned island off the coast of Nagasaki Prefecture in Japan more commonly known by its nickname Gunkanjima, or “Battleship Island.” The eerie island, which opened up to tourism in 2009 after being abandoned in the mid 1970s, also served as the inspiration for the villain Raoul Silva’s lair in Skyfall. You can explore the abandoned city — beyond the paths available to tourists — using Google Maps.
