Wonderfully Eerie Photos of an Abandoned Railway in Paris

In his wonderfully eerie photo series “By the Silent Line,” French photographer Pierre Folk documents the Chemin de fer de Petite Ceinture (Little Belt Railway), an abandoned railway in Paris. Work began on the 19-mile circular system in 1852, and it was originally built to link competing Paris railways and to provide ready access to the city’s 19th century defensive wall. The system was partially abandoned in 1934. Some lines have been repurposed for the city’s modern transit system, but much of the system is slowly going back to nature.
