posted by Scott Beale on Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

A Shell Oil Company ROV (remotely operated vehicle) shot photos of a rare alien-like Magnapinna squid with “elbows” at the Perdido ultra deep oil drilling site in the Gulf of Mexico. National Geographic has the full story, including photos and video.

Thanks to Kevin Mathieu, RICK! and Jozef Zábojník for the tip!

  1. that squid is totally laughing at us

  2. The super jerky camera angles are awesomely freaky.

  3. This is CRAZY! I find it oddly fitting that almost all of our extra-terrestrial images can be found as creatures that live in the deep sea.

  4. cthulhu fhtagn!

  5. Damn. Imagine sitting in front of some monitors in a dark room as you guide the ROV and suddenly coming across this. It's like playing Half Life or something, only in real life. My heart would probably stop.

  6. Oh, and video on the National Geographic site is choking.
