Czech Man Proclaims Founding of ‘Liberland’, A Micronation on the Croatian–Serbian Border
On April 13, 2015, Czech Libertarian politician Vít Jedlicka announced the formation of the Free Republic of Liberland, a 2.7-square-mile micronation situated on the border between Croatia and Serbia. He also announced his election as the nation’s first president. According to Jedlicka, the nation exists in land that is unclaimed by either Croatia or Serbia due to an ongoing border dispute. As the nation’s first press release explains, the objective of Liberland’s founders is “to build a country where honest people can prosper without being oppressed by governments making their lives unpleasant through the burden of unnecessary restrictions and taxes.” Liberland is currently accepting citizenship applications, provided the applicants fulfill the following requirements:
- have respect for other people and respect the opinions of others, regardless of their race, ethnicity, orientation, or religion
- have respect for private ownership which is untouchable
- do not have communist, nazi or other extremist past
- were not punished for past criminal offences
