SomaFM

SomaFM is an great online radio station run by my friend Rusty Hodge, who I met back when we were working with the original Burning Man web team (he also runs a pirate radio station at Burning Man). Broadcasting from a garage in San Francisco, Rusty started SomaFM in 1999, after years of experimenting with streaming media. I’ve been listening to it almost daily while working, specifically the highly addictive stations Groove Salad, Secret Agent and the new Space Station Soma.

Running a “listener-supported, commercial-free, underground/alternative” online radio station can be a pretty expensive project, especially when it comes to dealing with royalty fees and the DMCA. If you are a fan of SomaFM or independent radio in general, please considering supporting SomaFM through a donation, by buying a t-shirt or compilation CD.

We’ve been listening to Groove Salad since 2000, when we had it running almost around the clock keeping us company and reminding us of home (S.F.) while we spent two years living in far away Wellington New Zealand.

I've been listening to various SomaFM stations since 2000 as well. Big Url's robotic voice has been my companion in many late night server rebuilds. Nobody in the office at that hour, so I turn it to 11, or at least 10 1/2.
