Smart Polymer Chair Self-Assembles After You Take It Home

Chair by Carl de Smet

Belgian designer Carl de Smet is developing a smart polymer chair that can be purchased in a small collapsed form and then expanded to its full size and shape after purchase. The chair is made of shape memory polyurethane, which allows it to be expanded with the use of heat or electricity. Test versions currently expand at temperatures of 158 degrees Fahreneheit, but future versions will become soft and pliable at body temperature, allowing the chair to conform to the person sitting in it. For more on de Smet’s novel chair design, see this BBC article & video.
