Science Friday Explores the Mysteries of Winding Cucumber Plant Tendrils Using Time-lapse Video

“Unwinding the Cucumber Tendril Mystery”, a 2012 segment from the PRI show Science Friday, attempts to get to the bottom of some mysteries surrounding the tendril of a cucumber plant, the thin stem that threads around structures. The tendril exists primary as a support structure for the plant, to help put itself toward sunlight, a phenomenon we can see when examining time-lapse video like the kind shot by Indiana University biology professor Roger Hangarter.
