Last June I blogged about the fantastic Royal de Luxe Parade in Nantes, France. Well to everyone’s delight, Royal de Luxe is back with The Sultan’s Elephant show, which took place this week in London. The shows put on by Royal de Luxe are by far the most amazing public art installations/performances I have have ever come across. Here’s the BBC’s coverage of the four day event. A bunch of photos can be found on the Flickr blog and even more coverage over at Boing Boing.

For those who are tired of the pictures and of the video and want to see it live, because that’s the only way you will realize how powerful this piece of street art is:
The small Giantess and the Elephant of Royal of Luxe continue their voyage in 2006!
After Nantes and Amiens, The history of the sultan of the Indies on his “elephant to travel in time” will be told in London at the beginning of May, in Antwerten at the beginning of July, Calais at the end of September, Le Havre at the end of Octobe
My husband and I just returned to SF from London and luckily “stumbled” upon the amazing installation of the rocket in the street whilst walking back to the tube one day. We were hooked and returned the next day to see the capsule opon and this incredible girl emerge and begin walking the streets of London with a bemused expression on her face. Then she met this massive elephant. It was a spectacle beyond words.
This was the most fantastical piece of street theatre I’ve ever seen. Joyful, full of wonder, and strangely moving and life affirming. If you have a chance, travel to catch up with future shows. The memory of this will be a touchstone for both of us forever. Incredible!
