Passage

Here are some photos I shot at yesterday’s public opening of “Passage”, the amazing sculpture created by Dan Das Mann and Karen Cusolito, which was installed on San Francisco’s Embarcadero by the Black Rock Arts Foundation. The new Pier 14 opened to the public at the same time. If you find yourself down by Mission and the Embarcadero, you should stop by and check it out.

I am an artist and art lover, But these sculptures are about as butt ugly as I have ever seen. Maybe it is the very large size.

I first saw them being delivered on a flatbead truck and thought it was a mess salvaged from the bay being hauled away. I wanted to commend the city for cleaning up. Now, on one of the most historic waterfronts in America -once home to the infamous 1934 strike- are these zombie like figures in front of the Bay bridge. It makes me feel hopeless no one cares about getting anything right anymore. How much public involvement occurred? The millions of dollars spent on the nonfunctional narrow cage of a pier alongside is fitting punctuation for a ruined site. So much for sittin on the dock of the bay -watching the mon-ee flowing away.
