Defenestration Building

SFAppeal is reporting the old Hugo Hotel at 6th and Howard in San Francisco, the building that Brian Goggin transformed into the Defenestration, is being sold for 4.6 million. Defenestration is a wonderful site specific art installation that features furniture escaping from windows and roof of the building. When we all worked on it 1997 it was only supposed to be up for one year. Here we are 12 years later and it looks like it might finally be the end for this San Francisco cultural landmark.

UPDATE: SFGate City Insider has an update on the sale of the Hugo Hotel.

I always thought that this was a lovely example of quirk to show to visiting friends, but I’m very glad that this building is finally being sold. While I don’t approve of the misuse of Eminent Domain, the Hugo, is a clear example of when Eminent Domain should be used (i.e. holdout landlords with no sentimental attachment to the property who are trying to extort the City / developers are a much bigger pay day.)

i bike past that place every day. Really cool building.

6th Street is really being changed though and “cleaned up” which usually means the awesome graffiti art, art pieces and even citizens will be covered up and displaced in order to increase land value.

A trend i see a lot in the big city.

I live immediately next to the Defenestration. You can see my house in that picture. For all you yuppy ass bastards that talk about “preserving art” yet live in a safe clean neighborhood several blocks away – please shut up. 6th street needs to be cleaned up.
