This Saturday, July 21st Ritual Coffee Roasters is organizing “Bikes! Betting! Booze!”, a bicycle race and fundraiser for Bikes To Rwanda, a project to send cargo bikes to Rwanda to help co-operative coffee farmers transport their coffee and improve their quality of life.

Danger! Sin! Enormous feats of strength and endurance!

High Noon at 1026 Valencia Street. Several Racers will enter and one will win. The challenge these racers face is getting from Valencia street to 1634 Jerrold Ave. with a sack filled with 130 pounds of unroasted coffee beans. The bags will start on the sidewalk. The whistle will be blown. The racers will figure out some way to strap the bag to themselves or their bike and then they are off. No trailers. The beans have to stay in the one bag.

After checking out the racers you get to decide who will win. Place your bets. All the bets are placed, and then we all ride along to 1634 Jerrold to a beautiful oasis filled with palm trees and coffee. We watch a beautiful film about Rwanda. It is moving.

There’s going to be a raffle. Good prizes.

There will be a lot of coffee.

Then we all go to the local watering hole where the nice bar tender is going to generously donate half of their tips.

Why? To get bicycles to Rwanda Coffee Farmers. They need help. They grow good coffee, and then have to carry it over hills and mountains by foot while getting hardly compensated. You like coffee right? Then how about you come and have fun on a Saturday and get some bikes to the nice coffee farmers.

Noon: 1026 Valencia
One PM: 1634 Jerrold
Dusk: Drinkin’ hole.

It’s too bad this is the same day as the other bike/booze fundraiser, Tour de Fat. How to choose? I guess it depends if you want to think global or local…
