NASA Celebrates the Huygens Probe Landing 10th Anniversary With a Photo Zoomed a Billion Times to Titan’s Surface
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of successfully landing the Huygens probe on the surface of Saturn‘s largest moon Titan, NASA has released a video showing a 1,000,000,000x (that’s one billion!) photo zoom into Titan’s surface. The Huygens probe landed on Titan on January 14, 2005 and was delivered to the distant moon by NASA’s Saturn orbiter Cassini.
The video combines images taken by the Cassini orbiter as well as photos taken by the Huygens probe during its descent by its onboard Descent Imager/Spectral Radiometer (DISR) instrument. On the surface of Titan, the Huygens probe illuminates a small area with a lamp to perform spectral analysis.
