Lightning Striking A Fluorescent Tube

First of all, we think it’s just incredibly cool that there is such a thing as a real artificial lightning generator, and we’re just a little bit jealous that people can experiment with it (leave it to Japan to take sci-fi into reality). Were it up to us, we’d probably try and do things like roast marshmallows, cook hot dogs, and see what we could make unnecessarily explode, like Peeps or something. Lucky kids: to see what would happen to a fluorescent tube, the crew of Tobidase! Kagaku-kun (“Leap Out! Science Boy”) visited CRIEPI, an astounding 12-million-volt artificial lightning generator at the Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry in Japan. The video shows exactly what happens in slow motion, with a helpful stunt crew member emerging unscathed.
