The WordPress Automatic Upgrade Plugin Rocks

WordPress Automatic Upgrade Plugin

The WordPress Automatic Upgrade Plugin, created by Keith Dsouza of Techie Buzz, is one of the best WordPress plugins ever written. It makes upgrading WordPress quick and super easy, letting you know exactly it what is doing each step of the way.

It it does a backup of both your files and database, grabs the latest version of WordPress, disables and then re-enables your plugins and even puts your blog into maintenance mode during the upgrade.

Of course there is always the chance that the upgrade will fail, so if that happens you’ll need to follow the WordPress upgrade instructions to do a manual upgrade.

Here’s more information on the latest version of WordPress.

Big thanks to Chris Messina for turning me on to this plugin.

  1. Yes, but will it mess with my template?

Only one way to find out. . . .

  2. It doesn’t touch your templates… but if the underlying WordPress software changes, you might need to update your template.

  3. You can also use subversion to update wordpress. When you need to upgrade, just type in a single svn switch command to upgrade to the desired branch.

  4. Only one way to find out. . . .

  5. Just tried it to upgrade from wordpress 1.5.2 on your servers and got “Could not backup your WordPress files. Failed at Step 1.”

  6. You’re right, this is awesome. Thanks!!

  7. this plugin sucks it fails as step 2 every time. and the support available on the homepage is pitiful

  8. I hope automattic makes their own ‘WordPress Automatic Upgrade Plugin’ someday. It makes headache to me everytime WordPress get upgraded, i have to upgrade my WordPress

  9. Thanks - this is an awesome tip. Just found it via @clintus on Twitter.

  10. Hey wanted to say thanks for this. I used it, loved it, and twittered it.

  11. The built-in automatic upgrade plugin for WordPress 2.5 stopped working recently. I was told by a tech support guy that it’s because I installed and activated the WordPress Automatic Upgrade Plugin. He suggested I deactivate the plugin. I did this, but the automatic plugin upgrade feature still does not work.

Anyone else have this experience? Suggestions?
