The AirPiano, A Musical Device Played By Moving Hands In The Air

posted by Scott Beale on Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Designer Omer Yosha has created a prototype of The AirPiano, an amazing musical device that is controlled by moving hands in the air above it. Here’s more on The AirPiano from Create Digital Music.

Above the AirPiano is a virtual matrix of keys and faders, each assigned with MIDI messages and ready to be triggered. The length of a triggered note is equivalent to the time a hand is placed on the corresponding virtual key.

I liked playing an "air harp" which had no strings. A cool move was to take a tennis racket (yes, tennis racket) and move it in the area of the harp normally covered by strings. :-)

Strings give more control though - I'm a violinist at heart...
