Pixish, Creating Visual Assignments For Creative People

Pixish

Derek Powazek has just launched his wonderful new service Pixish, a way to find creative people for visual assignments. People who have a project in mind for an artist can create an assignment, artists then submit their work, which the community reviews and then winners are selected, receiving prizes and rewards. The service is somewhat similar to Threadless, but not limited to just one product. Here’s more info on how it works.

Derek has even posted his own unique assignment Pixish where he’s looking for illustrators to create a Leaf in the River Tattoo for his arm.

Derek has been quite busy lately. Along with the launch of Pixish, he recently re-launched Fray as a quarterly printed book and debuted The Magazineer blog.

UPDATE 1: Derek tells the story of how Pixish was born.

UPDATE 2: There has been quite a bit of discussion about how Pixish is being used for design spec work. Derek has responded, saying that they are now only focusing on photos and illustrations.

  1. So basically this is encouraging the terrible practice of post-paid or pro bono illustration. “So yeah why don’t you just submit a bunch of ideas and I’ll pay you if I like any of them” Actually, this is even worse — the illustrator gets a f’ing prize!?!?

    Way to devalue illustration!

  2. Hi, I’m Derek from Pixish. Thanks for the link!

I just wanted to say that the concern over spec work is understood on our end and we’re going to be making some changes to the site to make it more clear that it’s not what the site is about. Remember, we’re still in beta. We released it early to gather feedback, so thanks for that!

Here’s more thinking on the subject: http://pixish.com/news/3

It’s important to remember that there is paid work on Pixish, and we’ll be adding more tools to support that in short order.

In the end, Pixish won’t be right for everyone, and that’s okay. But I hope you’ll give us some time to improve the site and then give us another look. And definitely keep letting us know what you think!

  3. Derek: Where is this paid work? All I’ve seen is spec projects. Will there be a section of Pixish that is for work-for-hire projects?
