Laughing Squid’s own head of special projects John Law will be featured tonight and tomorrow on The History Channel show “Cities of the Underworld” hosted by Don Wildmon, a series where Don travels the world exploring subterranean structures.
The episode with John is about San Francisco and in his segment they explore San Francisco’s Word War II bunkers and talk about the San Francisco Suicide Club. John, along with assistants John Hell, Katy Bell, CJ Desoda and Little Missy, “kidnapped” The History Channel crew taking them on a San Francisco adventure.
While most people think of San Francisco as a haven for peace-loving hippies, this city by the Bay is actually one of the biggest military defense installations in America. We’ll take you beneath its picturesque hills and uncover the biggest ammunitions depot on the West Coast before plunging into a deadly arsenal that once stored nuclear missiles with more than six times the destructive power of the atom bomb dropped on Hiroshima. From the secret Civil War fortification buried beneath Alcatraz to the human trafficking tunnels winding below Chinatown, San Francisco’s underground is evidence of its sordid past.
The episode airs tonight Monday, January 12th at 9pm and tomorrow, Tuesday, January 13th at 1am. The History Channel is on Comcast channel 62 in San Francisco.

My mom in Fresno called me about seeing this last week…
Wow, this sounds spectacular. Hope I can catch it.
Argh !!
Is there any way to see this, one day, outside the USA ???
Is that 9pm PT?
As far as I know the times are local, but you should check your local listings just to be sure.
Yeah, that was a fun, and very silly day. Does anyone have access to the History Channel? Neither John, myself, Katy Bell, or Dave and Simone watch much TV, and therefore do not have cable service.
Let us know if you can host.
mrjohnhell@yahoo.com.
Thanks.
We found a place to watch it. Wait till you see how we got them up there. Too funny. The best part is how Dave and I kept trying to fuck with them. I’m sure that won’t make it on the final cut though.
It’s actually a great lesson in the production and “spontaneity” of reality TV. They do take after take of the same scene. They made John Law do and say the same thing over and over. And all the while the host had this intensely interested look upon his face.
I really couldn’t tell if he was sincere, or just paid to look that way.
After the shoot, which kept us underground for over three hours (sorry again to a very pregnant Simone (congrats btw, I just heard the great news), and Katy Bell), we went to dinner, at a great Richmond Dist steak house, that at this time i cannot recall. The crew was great, as was the host. We had a lot of fun chatting it up with these guys, who appeared to be just as surprised as the rest of us that people watch this tripe.
Anyway, enjoy.
For those in SF programming their tivo, the second showing is actually 1am on the 13th.
Is there anyway to find the bunker that doesn’t involve looking all over the Presidio and headlands? I tried to see if I could tell where it was by watching the show, I have my guesses but nothing solid…
Did anyone find a 15 year old blue-black sweater or the Mummified critter? It was accompanied by a mix tape circa 1994…
i wish i could go to that spot.where is it how do i find it i know sf well but cant locate it.could anyone tell me the actual name or use of that underground facility
The show is super-cheezy but fun. I’m more familiar with the Nike stuff than the bunkers, but even so I’m pretty sure which bunker it was. The give-away was peeking out the hole to see the non-infiltrating visitors.
Battery Townsley is similar and open to the public on the 2nd Sunday of each month. http://www.parksconservancy.org/calendar/index.asp?event=660
We blindfolded the History Channel crew, what makes you think we’re going to tell you?
Its not that hard to find people, took me 6 hours of searching.
Took me less than that to find the bunker. The hole was indeed the dead giveaway and never should have made it on air. I didn’t go looking for the entrance but a quick search of the net revealed the blueprints for the bunker which would tell you exactly where to look. Battery Townsley would be a much safer place to go screwing around guys. Of course if the entrance is not yet covered by the district you would need to get very high in the park.
