A Spunky Penguin Gets Fitted for a Custom 3D Printed Replacement for the Foot He Lost in 2007
A sweet but spunky little blue penguin named Bagpipes was fitted by mechanical engineer Dr. Don Clucas for a custom 3D printed prosthetic replacement for the foot that he lost in 2007 due to tangled fishing wire. Because of his injury, Bagpipes has been a resident of the International Antarctic Centre in Christchurch, New Zealand. Penguin caretaker Mal Hackett spoke with The Press about the penguin.
He’s our resident bad boy with a soft streak. …When he gets out of the pool he is using parts of his body that he shouldn’t, like his beak and flippers, so hopefully this prosthetic will help with that.
