‘The sound of empty space’, An Art Installation Exploring the Harmonic Sounds of Feedback
The sound of empty space is an art installation by Montreal-based composer Adam Basanta that explores the harmonic sounds created when feedback is generated between microphones, speakers, and their environment. The exhibit features multiple scenarios, including a rotating microphone, and–in the case of The loudest sound in the room experienced very quietly–a mic, PA system, and a speaker cone all enclosed inside a soundproof aquarium.
Through pieces which are equal parts banal, inventive, and absurd, sound is revealed not as a distinct object or autonomous event, but rather as a mutable product of interdependent networks of physical, cultural and economic relations.
