Unusual Designer Grapes — Super Elongated ‘Witch Fingers’ and Grapes That Taste Like Cotton Candy
Redditor pocketmole recently picked up some unusually elongated grapes at a Texas grocery store. Redditor Farmertmi, a UK grape technologist who “who travels the world sourcing grapes for the major supermarkets,” commented on the grapes and said, “These grapes are called Witches fingers and are from the Californian breeding program International Fruit Genetics. Although it sounds like it could be GMO it’s not, they are made through the hybridisation process of taking pollen from one plant and brushing it onto another plant,” and furthered, ” There are quite a number of these varieties now, in different colours as well.
What’s really interesting is that IFG also have a few other unusual varieties such as ‘cotton candy’ which when ripe acquires the taste of cotton candy – it’s very unusual but also delicious…” Los Angeles Times quotes California-based fruit breeder and head of research at IFG, David Cain, who states why he created these super-sweet hybrid cotton candy-flavored grapes, “We’re competing against candy bars and cookies.” Both varieties of designer grapes will be available soon in high-end U.S. supermarkets.
