The late great David Bowie performed two of his iconic anthems, “Life on Mars” and “Ashes to Ashes” while appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson on September 5, 1980. The latter had just been released on Bowie’s album Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps). Bowie was also starring on Broadway as John Merrick in The Elephant Man
