Young People Talk About How They Felt When They First Came Out of the Closet

If I could tell my closeted self something from my out self, I would say, don’t wait until someone drives you to do it that you should do it for you.

In this wonderful video posted by BuzzFeedYellow, seven young people talk about their experience coming out to their families and their friends. One young man shared he had come out when he was a sophomore and how his crush translated “into so much hate so easily”. A blonde haired woman in yellow talks about the standing ovation she got from her little town when she brought her date out on stage at an event. Another man talks about how his mother said that his being on drugs would be better because “at least drugs could be fixed”. But over time, things got better, families became more engaged and accepting and although coming out was scary, not one of the interviewees regretted doing it.

Their advice? Like so many other things, you should only do what you want to do when you are ready to do it for yourself. No one else needs to decide it for you.
