An Explanation for the Mysterious Deaths of Hundreds of People Found at Skeleton Lake

In a recent video from their 100 Wonders series, Atlas Obscura provides an explanation for the mysterious deaths of hundreds of human skeletons found in Roopkund, a glacial lake in India nicknamed “Skeleton Lake” because of all the skeletons.

The skeletons were first found in 1942, and for decades the cause of death was a mystery. Clues to what killed the people in Skeleton Lake existed in songs and folktales, but it wasn’t until 2005 that the exact cause of death was confirmed.
