Engineers Adapt Red Bull’s Championship-Winning Formula 1 Car to Run on Madrid Metro Tracks

Red Bull Racing’s Heritage Team and Spanish engineering collective Andtonic adapted the RB8, the Formula 1 (F1) car in which four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel won the 2012 Drivers’ Championship, to run on Madrid Metro tracks. Because the RB8 and the rails themselves could not be reconfigured, the team developed custom metal wheels light enough to protect the car’s suspension, gearbox, and driveshafts.

In our latest challenge, we turned Sebastian Vettel’s World Championship-winning RB8 into a one-of-a-kind Madrid Metro train, showing every step of our journey from Milton Keynes to the Madring.

Once the RB8 was ready, former F1 driver Patrick Friesacher got behind the wheel and drove it through sections of the closed Madrid Metro network.

Behind the wheel was former Formula 1 driver Patrick Friesacher. And with the first turn of the wheels, he pulled away into Madrid’s  metro system.
