High-Speed Photography of Wires Exploding Into Plasma

Electrical engineer Patrick Herd captured amazing high-speed photos of exploding wires as part of Project Sigma Mesa. After capturing photos of wires just as they turned into plasma, Herd created 3D-printed molds of the letters “L,” “U,” and “X” to contain the plasma as it exploded. The “L” failed to contain the plasma and completely exploded, but the larger and stronger “U” and “X” molds were successful. You can read more about the project and find more photos on Herd’s blog.
