Wils determined that only two of the six eggs were viable. The first hatching went very smoothly, but the second was more difficult due to a dry membrane. Wils slowly coaxed the tiny hatchling out of her shell by painting the egg with water.
The second egg was running late and when I picked it up, I could see why. The membrane looked very dry. This could be an issue as the membrane shrinks as it dries out. This limits her ability to move.
After a few weeks, when both little emus were healthy and happy, Wils repaired the hatched shell with gold leaf in the spirit of the Japanese art of Kintsugi.
