Bring Your Own Big Wheel 2007

Over a thousand race fans showed up today for the 7th annual Bring Your Own Big Wheel race down San Francisco’s Lombard Street, you know, the really crooked one. There were total of four runs down the hill with what must have been close to hundred racers, many with absurd outfits, trying to make it to the bottom of the hill on their plastic-wheeled vehicles. Here are the photos I shot of the big wheel chaos.

BYOBW is organized each year by Jon Brumit. Thanks Jon!

There were a bunch of cameras covering the action, including the following:

If I don’t have your photos or video listed, just leave a comment and I’ll add your link.

UPDATE 1: Jon Brumit has updated the BYOBW website saying that there was quite a bit of damage done to the gardens on Lombard Street by race fans. He’s asking for donations to cover the expenses, if not he’ll have to take care of it out of his own pocket. So if you had a good time at BYOBW and want to support what all of Jon’s hard work to make them happen, please consider making a donation so that he will be able to continue doing this event in the future.

Jason DeFillippo has posted an update on the situation over at SF Metroblogging.

UPDATE 2: Check out Michael Bean’s awesome BYOBW video from his two helmet-mounted cameras.

Looks like some crazy fun times.
I particularly like the Mario Luigi duo!

Damn man! Great stuff as always. I have 550 shots to go through and it’s not going to be done for a few days. You captured the day perfectly!

Scott Beale April 9, 2007 at 1:18 am

Jason: Thanks man. Good hanging out with you.

if it weren’t for such hills and finances i’d SOOOOOO move the SF just for this ride!

Stuart April 9, 2007 at 6:49 am

Great pictures and awesome times – I had no idea how much fun it was going to be. I have more video here, too.

Jim Goldstein April 9, 2007 at 10:46 am

Awesome post. Great event. It was an honor to face off across Lombard with you (even if unknowing) and document the event.
I’ve crosslinked my blog post Bring Your Own Big Wheel 2007 to this entry. Great collection of images.

Will you guys post the raw video somewhere? It would be really cool to play with it, make a cool edit and share it back with everyone.

Chrissy April 9, 2007 at 12:12 pm

Awesome pics & vids. Stuff like this is the reason why I moved to San Francisco.

I had a blast.. thanks a ton for putting this on, Scott!

Scott Beale April 9, 2007 at 1:18 pm

Chrissy: I’m not the organizer of the event, Jon Brumit is the guy who makes it all happen.

If you can some how just download all my photos from that set and run them through a slide show at 1 second each, it looks really cool!

halooooo! thanks for showing up!! and for seven years now! yesterday was so far beyond what i ever expected, makes me want to dig up pix from the first race with only one lone racer (me) and a dozen incredulous spectators, hilarious .. pathetic! anyway i’m thrilled and honored by all of it, all the creative energy, the appeal to help restore plants and bushes, and hosting and organizing so many photos and links and such! see yall again soon i hope!! HEY – a bunch of people didn’t get prizes that probably should have!? email me and we’ll sort it all out

I spent the majority of my formative years on Big Wheels.
We definitely need to host one of these in Brooklyn NYC!! Anyone up for planning one with us let me know :) — anthony@brooklynartproject.com

Hey Scott,
Thanks for the note, I’ll update my blog posting.

I have a quick question.. do you get a trackback request every time I edit that post? If so, that sucks. Sorry man.

Scott Beale April 11, 2007 at 10:13 pm

Chrissy: No to worry, trackbacks are only sent once.
