Designer John Bonadies is using a Kickstarter project to fund LetterMPress, a beautiful virtual letterpress for iPad.
LetterMpress will be a virtual letterpress environment, released first on the iPad that will allow anyone to create authentic-looking letterpress designs and prints. We created a prototype of the app and have been getting feedback from designer, artists, and letterpress printers and it’s been extremely positive!
Simulating obsolete technology may seem like an odd use for a tablet device, but more than 900 people have backed the project, pushing it well past its initial goal of $15,000. According to Bonadies, the initial $15,000 will be used to buy a rare trove of wooden typesets from a collector. As for additional funds:
Along with these rare, complete collections of wood type, additional funds will also allow us to get help creating the high-resolution photos and scans of the wood type and their corresponding impressions.
The type that we aquire will be housed at a new letterpress co-op called the “Living Letter Press.” This co-op will be a resource to designers, artists, students, and anyone interested in learning letterpress.
