Monumental Net Sculptures by Janet Echelman

Artist Janet Echelman creates intriguing large-scale sculptures out of netting. Echelman originally took her inspiration for the sculptures from the nets used by fisherman in South India. The net sculptures, some of which are hundreds of feet long, have been suspended in vast outdoor and indoor spaces including high above the Amstel River in Amsterdam and Terminal 2 at San Francisco International Airport. Her latest sculpture will be installed later this year in Vancouver, Canada for the TED2014 conference. At 700 feet in length, it will be Echelman’s largest public sculpture to date. The Burrard Arts Foundation is raising funds for Echelman’s sculpture on Kickstarter.
