While we were at Gnomedex last weekend, Laughing Squid support ninja Jason Laskodi accidentally discovered the Twitter profile for Abe Vigoda, which updates once an hour confirming that Abe is in fact still alive.

For year’s it’s been a running joke that the 86 year-old actor Abe Vigoda, best known for his role as Detective Sgt. Fish on the TV show Barney Miller, was dead. Since 2001 Greg Galcik has been tracking the status of Abe Vigoda on abevigoda.com and he even recorded the song “Abe Vigoda’s Dead”, a wonderful parody of the classic Bauhaus song “Bela Lugosi’s Dead”.

UPDATE 1: Matthew Balousek just informed us about an awesome Abe Vigoda Status application for Facebook that his brother Robert Balousek wrote.

UPDATE 2: Bill of The Philter wrote a great blog post about The Abe Vigoda Phenomenon back in 2005. [via xian in the comments]

There’s a facebook application, too.

(Full disclosure: my brother wrote it.)

There used to be an Abe Vigoda add-on for Firefox that likewise verified his status either on launch or at regular intervals but it appears to be missing from the current add-on registry.

So-called Bill of thephilter.com has done quite a bit of blogging about Abe Vigoda and his continued aliveness over the years:
