The Library of Congress Adds Photos To Flickr, Encourages Tagging
Flickr has just launched The Commons, a pilot project where they have partnered with The Library of Congress to provide an place where people can help tag public photo collections, thereby making the collections easier to search and use. Here are the announcements from Flickr and The Library of Congress.
There are two main aims to The Commons project, starting with the pilot: firstly, to increase exposure to the amazing content currently held in the public collections of civic institutions around the world, and secondly, to facilitate the collection of general knowledge about these collections, with the hope that this information can feed back into the catalogues, making them richer and easier to search.
There are some really interesting photos in there, so start viewing and tagging!

for some reason the first thing that popped into my head was people tagging things like “secondary light source in faked apollo 11 landing”

The pictures of the 1930s-1940s are so cool. Seeing that time period in color just seems wrong since we are just so used to seeing it in black and white. Seeing it in color makes it seem so much more modern somehow.
