Giant Squid Video Footage Now Online

In December 2012, we posted that Discovery Channel and Japanese channel NHK had collaborated to capture the first-ever video footage of the elusive giant squid in its natural environment. That footage, featuring a 3 meter long giant squid, is now available to view online (1, 2). Discovery News has more of the story.

After around 100 missions, during which they spent 400 hours in the cramped submarine, the three-man crew tracked the creature from a spot some 15 kilometers (nine miles) east of Chichi island in the north Pacific Ocean.

UPDATE: Discovery released their official clip of the giant squid online on January 24, 2013.

Dr. Steve O’Shea descends into the depths of the Ogasawara seas in hopes of catching the first live glimpse of the elusive giant squid. This clip contains an amazing discovery.
