In today’s edition of the Dayton Daily News, the newspaper cleverly mocked Ohio State University by running the headline “THE University of Dayton” after the Dayton Flyers‘ amazing NCAA men’s college basketball win over the Ohio State Buckeyes yesterday. Ohio State University officials have referred to the college as “THE Ohio State University” to promote their national stature and help separate them from other Ohio colleges.
The Ohio State University Libraries explains the reason for the “THE”:
Legend also has it that “The” was used to show the other colleges which institution was supposed to be the leader in the state – both in size and in financial support from the legislature.
