Wikipedia Zero Will Provide Mobile Wikipedia Access in Areas Without Internet

Wikipedia Zero

The Wikimedia Foundation has announced Wikipedia Zero, a project that aims to provide free access to Wikipedia in developing countries by partnering with service providers to waive data charges on the mobile version of the crowdsourced encyclopedia. According to The Next Web, users who call *515# on their phone will receive a text message asking for their search query. After responding with a search term, a second message will provide a list of related articles. Users will be asked which section of the article they would like read, and then the service sends the relevant part of the article. Wikipedia Zero is launching a three-month pilot in Kenya before expanding to other locales.
