Video and Photo of Space Shuttle Discovery Launch Shot From Airplane

Neil Monday shot footage from an airplane of the Space Shuttle Discovery launching for its final mission.

The STS-133 crew members are Commander Steven Lindsey, Pilot Eric Boe and Mission Specialists Alvin Drew, Michael Barratt, Steve Bowen and Nicole Stott. Bowen replaced astronaut Tim Kopra, who was injured in a bicycle accident in January.

Discovery will deliver and install the Permanent Multipurpose Module, the Express Logistics Carrier 4 and provide critical spare components to the International Space Station. This will be the 35th shuttle mission to the station.

My mom saw the Space Shuttle launch from a JetBlue flight about to land in Florida. What are the odds?!

This photo of Discovery’s launch was taken by the mother of Foursquare founder Dennis Crowley who happened to be on a JetBlue flight at the time of the launch.

There are many more great images of the launch on the Flickr blog.

Actor, nerd, poet, producer, writer mikl-em made his name short so you wouldn't have to. In addition to his blog you can find his writing in "Hi Fructose" magazine and witness him almost life-sized in various plays at The Dark Room Theater in SF's Mission district.

He tends to write about theater, humor, San Francisco culture and history, and stuff that's just plain weird. He thanks Scott for sharing the keys to the Laughing Squid virtual HQ and promises to uphold whatever it is that the mirthful cephalopod would prefer to be uplifted.
