The RoboSimian, An Ape-Like Robot Built by the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory

JPL RoboSimian

The RoboSimian is an ape-like robot developed by the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory that is preparing to compete in the DARPA Robotics Challenge Finals in Pomona, California beginning on June 5, 2015. JPL showed off some of what the RoboSimian can do in a recent episode of its web series Crazy Engineering.

In the video, JPL Group Supervisor Brett Kennedy also explains some of the practical uses for the RoboSimian here on Earth—like search and rescue operations in dangerous areas—and also touches on the robot’s possible future use in space missions.
